Biggest Animal Ever On Earth

Blue whales, found in all the oceans of the world, are true leviathans, stretching as long as 100 feet and weighing as much as 200 tons. (A Brachiosaurus, perhaps the largest dinosaur, weighed an estimated 50 tons.) Since the animals don't have to support their weight in water, there are few disadvantages to their enormous mass-and several advantages. One advantage is that it's easier for these mammals to stay warm. Another is that they have no predators-other than killer whales, which attack in packs-bold enough to take them on.

The size and speed of blue whales once served to discourage human whalers in the days of sail-powered ships and hand-thrown harpoons. But with the arrival of explosive harpoons and the floating factory vessels of the 1920s, the equation changed; more than 350,000 of the animals were killed in subsequent decades. By the 1960s, blue whales were thought to be near extinction, and the International Whaling Commission banned further hunting of this species.

Wellington Man Swam 244 Metres Underwater on one Breath

Dave Mullins claims he is an "unusually slow" swimmer, but with lungs burning and legs aching he smashed the world record for an underwater swim without a breath not once, but twice.

Yesterday, the Wellington man swam 244 metres underwater on one breath, blitzing a record he set on Friday by 18 metres.

Using a mono fin, Mullins swam nonstop for four minutes and two seconds, completing nearly five lengths of the 50-metre Naenae pool.

"You have to get it pretty much spot on," he said. "You're after maximum efficiency, so the turns are pretty important."

Mullins said that though he was an "unusually slow" swimmer, the sport was all about lasting the distance.

American judge Grant Graves said yesterday's effort at the freediving competition - hosted for the first time in New Zealand - was one of the biggest increases in a world record he had heard of. "It was a very impressive swim."

Mullins said it would take a few days to recover from the rigours of busting world records because of the buildup of lactic acid in his legs.

The weekend exploits would set him up nicely for the Freediving World Championship in Egypt in six weeks, he said. There he will compete in an ocean freediving event, in which divers go as deep as they can without breathing equipment.

Mullins practises holding his breath as part of his training, making his muscles work while oxygen-starved. Earlier this year he set a national freediving record, becoming just the fifth man to reach 100 metres.

An Irish Setter has given birth to 16 puppies in a single litter at a kennel in Norfolk.

The owner of the dog, called Kelly, said the mother went through a 10-hour period of labour before giving birth to the pups.

Dee Farndell, who runs the breeding kennel at Terrington St Clement near King's Lynn, said the pups are worth about £700 each.

She expected 12 of the pups to be sold with four being kept within her family.

Mrs Farndell said: "For the first two weeks we did a 24-hour vigil. Neither of us went to bed.
